The Golden Rule: Last On, First Off
Always put your pearls on-last after applying makeup, perfume, and hairspray. Take them off first before getting undressed or beginning your nighttime routine. This minimizes exposure to chemicals that can dull the nacre.
Routine Maintenance
1. Wipe Gently
After every wear, wipe your pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth. This removes body oils and perspiration that can accumulate and erode the pearl's surface over time.
2. Cleaning
If visibly dirty, gently wipe the pearls with a soft cloth or brush. Do not use water, soap, or harsh cleaners, and never submerge stranded pearls.
Things to Avoid
Pearls are delicate. Knowing what damages them is half the battle in keeping them pristine.
Harsh Chemicals
Avoid direct contact with perfumes, hairspray, cosmetics, and household cleaners. The acid can eat away the nacre.
Water Submersion
Never wear pearls while swimming or showering. Chlorine and saltwater damage the pearl, and water weakens the silk thread.
Ultrasonic Cleaners
Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or jewellery dips. These are too harsh for organic gemstones like pearls.
Proper Storage
Separate & Soft
Store pearls separately from other jewellery. Harder stones like diamonds can scratch the soft pearl surface. Use a soft pouch or a lined jewellery box compartment.
Let Them Breathe
Pearls need moisture from the air. Do not store them in airtight plastic bags or bank vaults for long periods, as they can dehydrate and crack.
Flat is Best
Store necklaces flat rather than hanging them. Hanging for extended periods can stretch the silk thread, weakening the necklace structure.
Temperature Control
Avoid storing pearls near heat sources like radiators or in direct sunlight. Excessive heat can dry out the natural moisture within the nacre.
